What would you consider to be your greatest treasure in life? Your house, your children, your car, your job, your spouse? Would other people in your life say the same thing when asked about what you prioritize? It’s easy to think about what we should theoretically treasure the most, but our actions show the truth of what we value most. Consider what you spend any free time on or where you spend any extra money you may have; our time and our money are both major indicators of what we consider most important in our lives. If we choose to devote our heart to things of this world, Scripture warns us that we cannot truly serve God as we were created to do.
So, where does Jesus and your relationship with him rank in your life? Whenever we treasure anything in our lives, even the good things, more than Jesus, we are putting something in a place that only he should occupy. When push comes to shove and you are forced to pick between worldly things or Jesus, where do your loyalties lie? If you are putting your hope and faith in anything other than Jesus, you are destined to be let down and heartbroken at some point because nothing else nor anyone else can love you unconditionally and be consistently there for you like he can.
DISCUSSION/REFLECTION QUESTION: What in your life have you treasured more than Jesus? Have you ever felt like your loyalties were divided when having to pick between Jesus and the other person/object? How did you decide what to do?
