To me looking at my motives is one way to paddle down stream. If what I’m about to say is to get a reaction that is not a good motive. I like to play the conversation out, check my heart, and then decide wether to proceed or not. Hurt people, hurt people. Using the wrong motive is usually trying to one up somebody. Praying for God‘s discernment.

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me." - Psalms 51:10-12

This is something I'm trying to work on as well. I've often been quick to retort when someone hurts me with words. I'm working on "biting my tongue". My mother always said, when people say hurtful things don't give them the satisfaction of knowing they hurt you...reply with kindness or not at all. I'm trying harder and harder to heed those words.
