Acts 9:15 says, “But the Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.’” In this passage, we see that God calls Saul, later named Paul, his chosen instrument. Notice the passage doesn’t say that Saul is a perfect instrument; in fact, he is far from it with his past of hurting and hunting down those preaching the message of Christ. But God is able to use anyone in any condition to accomplish something amazing and beautiful.
When we consider our own lives, we are all broken instruments in some way. But somehow, Jesus is able to use our lives and what comes out of it is this beauty and this is a picture of what we are as the Church. We are a mess, but we are a beautiful mess that God has redeemed and chosen. We want to be a reflection of that. We want to be his chosen instruments.
We are messy and broken but redeemed for God’s purpose. We are redeemed so that we can make music that will draw the world to him when they see the difference that Jesus has made. So, in Acts 9, Saul becomes Paul, and he is used by God to take the gospel to the Gentiles, to spread the good news of Jesus to the ends of the earth. And the story began with him breathing murderous threats, and it ends with him preaching about Jesus in the synagogue.
Reflection/Discussion Question: How has God used your brokenness to make music that draws others to him?
