Grace is not “clean yourself up, then come to Jesus”. Grace is not “you've got it mostly together, let Jesus fix your blind spots”. And grace is not “let's rubber stamp what everybody's doing already”. Grace means your debt has already been paid in full. Grace means you have perfect standing before God, no matter what your past looks like. Grace means Heaven is your eternal home. Grace means endless second chances for sins and mistakes.
Grace is for the proud and the ashamed. Grace is for the self-righteous and self-inflicted. Grace is for the glutton, the alcoholic, the serial gambler, and the addict. Grace is for the self-made, the self-reliant, and the self-obsessed. Grace is for the prison inmate plotting revenge. Grace is for the cubicle dweller plotting laziness. Grace is for the arrogant who doesn't think they need grace. Grace is for the legalist who doesn't like grace. Grace is for you! Grace means you are more sinful than you ever dared imagine, but you are more loved than you ever dared believe.
Reflection/Discussion Questions: Do you feel unworthy of grace? What about grace is intimidating or feels "too good to be true" to you?
