Your actions are shaped by your thoughts. Your thoughts are shaped by what you believe. Your beliefs are shaped by whom you love. So, whom do you love? Many of us would like to say that we love Jesus, but if God examined our hearts, he may find that the love of ourselves has crowded our hearts.
It isn’t even real love that we have for ourselves, but more like devotion. We devote our lives to our own dreams and desires. We pursue our own comfort and security. We want success, fame, recognition, wealth, and praise. We are so preoccupied with ourselves that we have no room in our hearts left to love Jesus. We may say we love Jesus, but our hearts reveal our true love.
When we do love Jesus, we stop putting ourselves first. This doesn’t mean we don’t love ourselves; it means that we find our identity in Christ. So, instead of devoting ourselves to our own lives in the hopes of creating an identity, we devote ourselves to loving Jesus. When we love Jesus, we are free to love others without an expectation of love in return. We are so filled with the love of Jesus that it overflows to people around us wherever we go. When we love Jesus, we will be willing to submit to him no matter the cost.
Reflection/Discussion Question: How can you know whether or not you truly love Jesus?
