Paul tells his readers to put on love, which he calls the perfect bond of unity. He says in verse 15 of Colossians 3, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” This verse reminds us of what Jesus said in John 17. In this chapter, Jesus is on his knees, and he's praying his last prayer before he goes to the cross, and on his heart is the unity of his church. Jesus says in verses 20 and 21: “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
Our commitment to each other in the body of Christ is a measure of our commitment to Christ and the gospel. Paul says to be in the Word of God together, sing songs together, and build each other up. There is so much power in community that we forgo enjoying and growing in when we choose to journey along Jesus by ourselves. By cultivating a loving community where fellow believers express kindness and forgiveness in the same ways that Jesus did, we become a powerful example of what life as a Christ-follower can be like. Paul’s letters to the early church continually remind them that they need one another in this life and are called to share in one another’s burdens and joys.
Discussion/Reflection Questions: Are you currently plugged into a community where you can be vulnerable and share your burdens with others? How has a Christ-centered community been a blessing to you?
