Some of you might feel like you are sitting underneath the tree and saying you’ve had enough right now, just like Elijah. You feel overwhelmed by the circumstances of life, and you can't turn on the news without feeling the weight of what's happening in the world around us. In our moments of despair, where you’re just overcome by the reality of life and the harshness of this world, you are in a great position to truly experience the love of Jesus and the love of others in community.
Maybe you are are skeptical and cynical, and maybe you have good reason to be because of what you’ve experienced in your life. You may feel as if church isn't for you. You don't think God sees you or that Jesus loves you. But Scripture tells us that this is all untrue. In your moments of despair and depression, when the world seems crushing and overwhelming, don't be alone. You need Jesus, and we also need each other. God meets Elijah is the desert with both gentleness and kindness when he is depressed, and God provides him rest. God provides what is needed in that moment, and then provides you the people in your life that you can live with and walk with on this journey.
DISCUSSION/REFLECTION QUESTION: When have you seen God’s provision in times of despair? Do you find yourself seeking God and community when you are feeling as though you’ve had enough? What difference could this approach make for you?
