As we often see in the Gospels, Jesus is teaching the crowds through parables when we start reading in Matthew 13. This parable is of the Sower, where Jesus explains the outcomes of the seeds that fall on different types of soil. Jesus, uncharacteristically, interprets the parable, whereas we normally see him leave it up to his audience to draw their own conclusions.
Jesus tells a story where a farmer goes out to a sow seed and some of the seed that lands on good soil, and something happens to that seed in the soil - in the soil the seed grows. In the soil, the seed is cultivated. In the soil, that seed matures. There is a lot happeining IN the soil – but here’s the thing: You can’t see what’s happening to the seed in the soil. But after enough time of something happening IN the soil, something finally breaks through the ground. And through that one seed comes a harvest that is multiplied thirty, sixty, even a hundred times.
So God wants to do work in us, but the question is, “What’s the condition of the soil?” You feel like you're not living your life with much purpose, or that you're not fulfilling the plan God has for you, or that you not getting the opportunity to make a difference. Instead of focusing on the harvest, focus on the soil.
